“EVO Chains” is an installation of three large-scale, intertwined chains in black wicker. E.V.O. stands for “Eslabón (Chains) of Vuelta de Obligado ”. Their links are inspired by those of the iron chains of the Battle of the same name, which were submerged in the Paraná River to prevent the invasion of the colonial Anglo-French fleet in Buenos Aires in 1845. Ten years later, the first wicker stick was planted in the Paraná Delta, leading to the development of creole basketmaking. This was learnt by many newly-settled immigrants, including my great-uncle who arrived in 1920 from Spain and embraced the craft.
"But how do we manage to connect with this world that is in a stage of unstoppable metamorphosis? Where do we anchor ourselves in the face of cultural acceleration? This exhibition invites us to strengthen ties with what surrounds us and what we can observe, feel and approach, to re-establish a lasting relationship with matter and transform art into a second skin that helps us inhabit the present”. Quote from Melisa Boratyn ́s curatorial text
